DIY Solar power may seem like a daunting task. Fear not, this video WILL set you on the right path. We start by unraveling the mystery of off-grid solar power and teach you the basics, how to understand and think about your system. From there, we show you how to access and size the proper system for an off grid back-up or full time off grid system. Once you’ve got that squared away, we talk all about batteries. Of all the components, batteries are probably the most misunderstood. There are some nuances in solar power that you must be aware of; this video will set you straight on where to mount and how to wire your panels for the best efficiency. Speaking of efficiency, do you know the difference between an MPPT and PWM solar charge controller? Just watch the video. Often the most overlooked component of any off grid system is safety, and for that we’ve got you covered as well. Finally, we finish up talking about living with your new system. There are LOTS of links in the video to the components used, schematics, and further information. ALL of these can be found on our “Ultimate Guide to Off Grid Solar” page-

I'm really impressed by your professionalism and information content. Well done! Thanks. BTW, I've been living in a truck camper off grid for 260 days per year for quite some time. I rely solely on my solar panels, controller and battery array – so I know whereof I speak. I find your presentation very accurate and complete!

  5. JJDBaca says:

Outstanding information and presentation. Great job.

I learned more in this video than the 15hrs worth of videos it took to find you !! That said, know one has explained or answered my question.
Deep cycle battery must be charged at high amps, 7-15 and topped off at a trickle or they become damaged over time (shortly) !
So how do I get say 10 amps out of panels and controller and drop to trickle. Like a good agm battery charger !!
And my VmaxTank wasn't cheap !!!

As a retired UK spark, I found your info’ actually refreshingly easy to watch. What you have offered as an example is perfect for all beginners. Solar is the future and we all have to save the planet.

  8. Walt Sowers says:

So if you can potentially use your four batteries as a 24v system, and 24v systems are more efficient then why are you running them as a 12v system?

Have you guys considered a system that tracks to sun?

  22. Clarissa W says:

I'm very interested in your generator. I thought wakesha only made huge co-gen's. what is your's rated at and a model number would help me get started. I noticed your panels are on fixed mounts….maybe if on trackers you can harvest more and run the wakesha less…?

  23. Lucy Lambert says:

I have a Degree in Renewable Energy and this book [link here >>> ] was required for the Solar Energy class. It is easy to read with good explanations. I would recommend to anyone.

My biggest question is why don't you take out a loan and get electricity? That system is a ton of work and aggravation. You are going to have to do it anyway when you sell your home.

  39. John Rider says:

Did you do it all yourself???

  40. Emsi Hamer says:

Great Video! Excuse me for butting in, I would love your thoughts. Have you researched – Lammywalness Wise Solving Guide (do a google search)? It is a good one off product for living off grid minus the hard work. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my buddy got great results with it.
